MORE GOOD GAMES

East Harbour Tennis Tournament RESULTS TO DATE The East Harbour Tournament held on the Muritai Tennis Club courts at Eastbourne has produced a large number of entries. The play has -been of a fairly high standard. One of the best matches was that an which B. Jenkinson beat K. Dyer, the seventh ranking player in ’Wellington. Jenkinson hit cleanly and drove hard, keeping Dyer from the net. The manner in which Dyer was made to run hard to the comers forced him into errors, mainly in the net. Nor did lie have any great success with his volleying and smashing on the occasions be did come in. Very foolishly Jenkinson, while still hitting well, slowed up his game in the second set, and might easily have lost the match -had he not gone back to his original game in the third set. In the third set be continually beat Dyer with slow angled short shots played as a variety to his hard hitting. The next day, however, Jenkinson was unable to deal with M. Ferkins’s heavy top spin drives to the corners, or with his heavily cut service.

A. Smith played a courageous game against the steady baseline game of Tosswill, and went to the net when he had two match points against him. Smith secured those two points with volleys off the wood and then proceeded to win the match, which lasted about two hours. Smith was superior in strokes to Tosswill, but lacked his opponent’s steadiness.

In the next round he met M. Ferkins and Could make as little an impression on him as Jenkinson did. Smith did not play nearly so well against Ferkins as he ‘had- done against Tosswill. A. D. Long played a very good game against N. Bedford, bringing off some beautiful backhand passing shots, forehand drives and useful lobs. Bedford, however, always held the advantage, though a number of the games that Long lost went to deuce.

F. Pears was beaten by Willis after a game that was one of careful placements and fine retrieving from the corners and lobbing on the part of both. Willis’s placements were better than Pears’s and he was sounder overhead when he went to the net. , Jarman played a steady placing game with some hard driving and good, lobbing to beat N. Morrison in the third set. Morrison had more strokes, but he lacked the accuracy of Jarman. Miss M. Macassey beat Miss A. Kean because of her greater experience and her play from the net. Miss Kean showed that she possesses a fine forehand, drive, but she is comparatively weak in her backhand, and on this Miss Macassey concentrated. As it was, Miss Kean missed many opportunities to win games. Miss Macassey also beat Miss D. Maslin because of her harder hitting, better placing and her volleying. Miss Maslin, who fought hard, let the ball drop too low before playing her shot. Therefore the ball bounced high enough for Miss Macassey to hit it hard with the minimum risk of error. > Results of the matches up to date are as follow: —
