Southland Player Leads LAST QUALIFYING ROUNDS ■ By Telegraph—Press Association. Cliristchurch, December 30. The fifth round of play in the New Zealand chess congress was completed yesterday. This was the last of the qualifying rounds to decide which players shall enter the finals. Games unfinished in the previous four rounds were also played. On the live rounds J. A. Erskine (Southland) is leading, having wou all live games. Next are A. W. Gyles (Wellington) and H. R. Abbott (Canterbury), Gyles having won four and lost one, and Abbott won three and drawn two. The following players will enter the final rounds: J.’ B. Dunlop, E. H. Severne, E. A. le Petit, K. Beyer, F. K. Kelling, J. A. Erskine, R. O. Scott, L. J. Darwin, E. E. Hicks, A. IV. Gyles, H. R. Abbott and winner of the game bet ween R. Watt, and N. Friberg. Results of Saturday’s plaj’ are:— First round: Erskine beat Scott. Second round: Hardy beat Scott. Third round: Friberg drew with Hicks. Fourth round: Severne bent Dyer. Fifth Roufid: Beyer drew with Dunlop; Abbott drew with-Hicks; Scott beat Kellii/:; Fairburn beat Watt; Le Petit beat Dyer; Erskine beat Hardy; Darwin beat Gray; Gyles beat Friberg; Severne drew with Armstrong. v CAPABLANCA BEATEN (Received December 30, 6.30 p.m.) London, December 29. After a five hours’ chess battle at Hastings Sir George Thomas surprisingly beat Capablanca in the second round in 53 moves. Capablanca lost a piece in the middle game an‘d was unable to recover.
