LAND OF IMMENSE RESOURCES
. BRITISH WEST AFRICA GREAT OPPORTUNITY FOR ENTERPRISE London, February 26. The report presented by the Parliamentary Commission which, under Captain Walter F,liot, recently visited West Africa, contains a rosy account of these possessions. It states that they are second only in importance to India from the Empire standpoint. It says that no industrial troubles exist because, owing to the bounty of Nature, it is only necessary to work for two months in the year. Twenty millions of natives are just tasting civilisation, and already buy more Brtish goods per capita than the United States. The huge land stretching to the borders of the Sahara, one of the biggest livestock areas in the Empire, is now carrying three million head. Thick seams of coal exist in the Enugu hillsides, and there are also rich tinfields. These, with the great palm oil belt of the coast, offer one of the greatest opportunities for British enterprise.
