CHARITY DAY IN PALMERSTON
COMMERCIAL TRAVELLERS COLLECT Palmerston North, February 25. In their annual endeavour to raise funds for charity the commercial travellers of Palmerston North were much in evidence to-day, when their various attractions were paraded before the public. Early in the morning the householders were approached with propositions detailing the excellent qualities for breakfast possessed by buns, and with customary eloquence the vendors disposed of the whole of the stock of 15,000 buns. Altogether -10 cars were out conveying these delicacies, the travellers evidently being actuated by the “right to the door” service. Later in the morning the legal side of the proceedings became more in evidence, and with a varied selection of judges, together with an efficient police force, the coffers rapidly began to fill, while at the same time an unusual allowance of originality was permitted those responsible lor the charge sheets. Fines ranging from 2s. (id. upwards were impartially meted out by the judge, who, however, found it difficult to impart the dignity of the proceedings to his prisoners owing to the fact that he was perched on the back of a motor lorrv. Other activities were a fruit stall, a fortune-telling parlour and a roll-down stall. In the afternoon the chief attraction was a procession of decorated motor-cars.
