SHOOTING AT TRENTHAM

OPENING MATCH WON BY A. W. POWELL WIN FOR H. R. HUNT IN DOMINION MATCH UNPLEASANT CONDITIONS ON RANGE Unpleasant weather conditions were experienced at Trenthani yesterday for the second day of the National Rifle Association’s annual meeting. Rain had fallen incessantly during ths night, and when marksmen paraded at the firing points for the Opening Match in tiie morning they found them in a sodden state. At intervals throughout the day there were drizzling showers of rain, while a dull light early in the day’s shooting occasioned competitors an element of trouble. Both the Opening Match and the Dominion Match were completed, the winner of the former being Rifleman A. AV. Powell (Akarana), and of the other Rifleman H- R. Hunt, of the Suburbs Rifle Club.

Light rain was falling when the first details went down to tire their seven shots at 300 yards in the first range of the Opening .Match, very light drizzling showers continuing during the morning. The wind was fairly steady, there being a light drift which occasioned very little trouble. The main difficulty was with elevation, due principally to light, which was dull. The light brightened a good deal as the morning wore on, and at the second ranges of 500 and 600 yards in the Opening .Match, the shooting improved considerably. On the whole the standard of marksmanship was well up to the average of past years, when Mark six ammunition was in use, although there.were a number of very poor scores. Firing in the Opening Match commenced shortly after 8 a.m., and was completed by mid-day. The A grade, oixm to all competitors who have been in the King’s Fifty, or who have won a single prize of more than .£2 at any New Zealand championship, N.R.A., or State meeting in their last four competitions during tho last: ten vears, was won by A. AV. Powell. Akarana, with an aggregate of 101 for the three ranges, seven 'rounds at 300, SGO. and 600 yards. At: 300 yards, for which conditions were not ns good as they might be, lie was one short of a possible with 34. He registered similar figures at 500 yards, a four for his second shot being the only blemish on an otherwise flawless target. At 600 yards he netted 33. making a total of 101 out of ft possible 105. The runner-up in the A grade was IT. Barlow (Linton), who registered 34’s at both 300 and GOO yards, and a 32 at 500 yards. The Australians were headed by E. AV. AVilesmith. of New South AA’alcs. who was in third place, also with an aggregate of 100. the count back going in favour of Barlow. The B grade, which is open to all remaining entries other than tyros, was won hr IV. Johnston, of Featherston, with an aggregate of 100. Tie had the possible at: 009 yards, and :- 33 at 300. and 32 nt 500 yards. Tn the tyro grade (a tyro is a competitor who has never won n prize of ,£1 nr more at anv New Zealand rifle championship meeting. N.H.A.. Dominion, or State meeting), the winner was was A. R. Elgar.- of Hawcra. with 98. this aggregate including a 33 at 300 and 500 yards, and a. 32 at COO yards. The Dominion Match, fifteen rounds at GOO yards, and fen rounds at 900 yards, tho first, stage of which was tired on Thursday, was completed yesterday afternoon. It was won by IT. R. Hunt

(Suburbs), who returned an aggregate of 120 out of a possible 125. His 72 at 600 yards on Thursday afternoon was the highest score for the first stage of the match, and it was then generally thought that anything like a good following score over the longer range would carry him through. His 48 at 900 yards, comprising nine bulls and a magpie, was sufficient to give him the match, with a clear lead of five over the runner-up, I’. IJ. Goldfinch (Old Navals). Hunt’s score of 72 at the 600 yards range represented twelve bulls and three Inners. His magpie at 900 yards was his. fourth shot. Goldfinch secured a possible at 'OOO yards, and at the 600 yard range be had'piit on a 65. The Victorian marksman. W. AV. Harris, also shot well for third place. Doth Goldfinch allil Harris registered 115’s, but the count back went against the Australian. Over the 600 yard range. Harris made a 6S, while at 900 cards he obtained nine bulls and an -inner. Another Suburbs marksman. S. , J. McLean, also shot well in the match, : end was in fourth place with 115. Tho first stage of the Marlborough Match, fen rounds at 300 yards, was fired during the late afternoon, when conditions were practically the same ns the morning, although at times tho southerly wind freshened a good deal, coming square across (he right. A 48 by a tvro. H. J. Bolter, of Dunedin, was the best score at 300. j Visitors to Trent ham yesterday were i (lie General Officer Commanding the New : Zealand Military Forces, Maior-General |R.
