March 2 —Manawalu 'T.C. Annual. March 9—Wyndham T.C. Annual. March 12—New Brighton T.C. Autumn. March 12—Oamaru J.C. Autumn. (By “Overcheck.”) Sea Pearl's form at Otahuhu was more in keeping with what one expects of her, and the probabilities are that she will not bo long in adding another good race to her credit. One does not like to believe that it is so, but tho form of Great Bingen at Auckland suggests that ho is not as goon as he was. Now that, we have no horse which stands out by itself, it is to be hoped that consideration will be given to the reinstatement of some of the lost free-for-all races. Had he not made his finishing run quite so soon Nelson Fame would probably have won the Coates Handicap at Otahuhu instead of sharing the stake with Jewel Pointer. When discussing with a high trotting authority a fe.v days ago Nelson Fame's attack on the mile record, the opinion was expressed to the writer that the horse had been driven into the ground and was absolutely done when ho fell. That his fall was not due to any physical defect was proved by his subsequent running. Tereneo Dillon ran himself on to a, tight mark when he won the Otahuhu Cup, but he is a young horse and seems certain to do still better yet., lie is a rare stayer, and stamina counts for so much in” races over two miles. Billv Carbine let his supporters down on Wednesday by failing to go off. Ho usually goes well and so may soon make amends. Anselino did it. right throughout the journey, and this materially assisted her to’win the Suburban Handicap. Roma Bingen, one of the horses fancied by the writer in the Suburban Handicap, was pulled up in the first furlong. Maid of the Mountains returned a sensational dividend when she unexpectedly won the Newmarket Handicap, while Admiral Lock returned double figures lor second place. Our Patch was unlucky during the running of the Newmarket Handicap, being interfered with at a critical stage of (he race through Concertina breaking. But for this she may have bad sufficient in reserve to have headed Admiral Lock and withstood the tine finishing effort of Maid of the Mountains. Van Rich is so consistent that it was pleasing to see him registering a win at Otahuhu on Wednesday, lie went away quickly, and I his enabled him to secure and maintain a good position throughout. Kohnra.'s luck was out on Wednesday, for ho was interfered with in each of the two races that ho contested. Peter Swift again went a good race in tlw l Dominion Handicap, but did not. do as well as 1 expected him to do in tho Richmond Handicap. His exertions in tho big race probably told against him. Native Prince wns made a good favourite for the Richmond Handicap, and fully justified the support accorded him. Dalmeny was unlucky, suffering serious interfereiico through Gohl Jacket breaking. As it was, flics’ll two finished fourth and fifth respectively. In discussing Padlock’s prospects in tho Richmond Handicap I suggested that, ho would probably require to go better than 4.28 io win. As it turned out. ho went 4.28 3-5 to finish second to Native Prince. There is no doubt that Padlock is a greatly improved horse, and even in tho better .company be will have to compole in in future appears certain to earn further stake inoncy.
GREYMOUTH PROSPECTS The Greymouth jubilee meeting will bo held to-day, and given hue weather should attract a record attendance. Some promising horses ore engaged m 11 Explorers’ Handicap, and of those on scrateh Dannv Bov ami Jackie Logan are a likelv pair. Tho former ran a fair race at Cl'ieviot. and should bo a better horse for the experience. Jackie Logan is reported to be working well, and finished on twins with Lady Embrace at the end of a mile and a quarter spm at Addington recently. Bessio Dtllon won tho Stafford Handicap at. tnfc land meeting in January, while earlier in the reason Rovnl Audubon showed fair form. The two first-named may, however, do best. . „ ~ Several of those in. the Dunedin Ilanaicap have winning form on their side, but for consistency nothing excels vai Logan. Bingenwood was twice first at the Westland meeting, defeating Aal Logan at a difference of 24 yards, whereas now there is but 12 yards between the pair. Heroic defeated both Bankhead and Newson at Oamaru in October, while Horotano won at Geraldine and Grevmbuth. Hard Knocks won the Cup at Cheviot, and cannot, be ignored, rhe three that may do best are Bingenwood, Heroic, and Hard Knocks. Eighteen have been accepted for in the West Coast Handicap, in which the winner may come from Reverie, Homeleigli Girl, Connie Audubon, and Kitty Patch. The two first-named, who are on the limit, show promise of turning out useful, and off the front should give a good account of themselves. Kitty Patch lias raced very consistently this season, winning at Westport in December, while at Greymouth in January she was second to Golden Spray in the Dunollie Handicap, when conceding 48 yards; now she receives 36 yards. Connie Audubon finished in front p f Kitty Patch when both started from 24 yards behind in the County Handicap, and the race between this pair should prove interesting. Possibly they and Homeleigh Girl will do best. Another big field will contest the Jubilee Cup, and the back-markers may have trouble in securing anything like a good run. I rather expect the winner to cbmo from Auditress, Lady Matchlight, Kreislcr, Orphan, and Royal Serene. Auditress, it is true, has not done much so far this season, but she is a young mare who should bo on the upgrade. Lady Matchlight has registered a couple bf wins, the most notable, perhaps, being when she defeated Jean McElwyn at Ashburton in September. Kreisler won the West port Trotting Club Handicap, while Orphan won a double nt Greymouth in October. Royal Serene also has secured a winning bracket. Possibly Kreisler, .Auditress, and Orphan may prove equal to earning stake money Tn the Brunner Handicj’ip Dick Logan. Audrey Dillon, and A’al Logan appear likely to finish in the money, but Great Audo appears to be on the upgrade, and mav bo troublesome to them. Bessie Dillon. Trespass, and T-id.V Minto are a likely trio in the Miners Handicap. I hare already . referred to the first-named when dealing With the Explorers’ Handica]). Trespass baa been
in the money in each of her three last starts, and a winning turn for her is overdue. Lady .Minto won the President's Handicap at Greymouth in January, Royal Authoress and Rap filling the places. Of the three, her chauces appeal most. Ajkdeome Whispers, Connie Audubon, Pe*T Fashion, and Golden Spray are possibilities in the A'isitors’ Handicap. Tho latter’s form has been particularly attractive, and she may tight, out tho finish with Peter Fashion, who has registered two firsts and two seconds in his last, five outings. Royal Authoress, Horotan*. and Asset off tiie front and Thorpic and Auditmss off 12 yards, aro to be respected in the Rush Handicap, but, I am inclined to favour Royal Authoress and Horolano most.
