PROFESSIONAL TOURNEY SECOND DAY’S PLAY By Telegraph—Press association. Timaru, February 23. The New Zealand professional goif tournament was continued to-day in tine but dull weather. Great interest was manifested in the play. The dav was devoted to the first two rounds of the South Canterbury championship, m conjunction with the Myers Challenge Cup. Tho competition tor the second stroke handicap was also decided on the play in these events. The course was in the same good condition as on. tho opening day, though one or two greens were tricky. Play reached a higher standard than the previous day. A. C. Butters throughout the day played nearer his true form, his afternoon round of 70 being a brilliant effort. J. A. Clements also gave an outstanding display, .bis card out in the morning over nine holes being 31. His iron work was weak on the homeward journey, for which he took 4-3. He registered the same aggregate score in the afternoon round. J. R. Galloway experienced a bad run in the morning, missing seven short putts in succession, but played excellently in the afternoon, being three under fours at the fifteenth hole. The New Zealand professional golf tournament; was concluded here to-day in bright weather. There was a large attendance of the public. Play was of an exceptionally high order. The South Canterbury championship, contested bv fourteen players, provided a very close and exciting finish, K. Butters (Miramar) winning the cun by a magnificent fifteen-foot putt which, gave him one point over A. J. Shaw (Napier). Both played brilliant golf throughout tho whole of the last round. Butters established a lead of one up at the seventeenth hole, and both finished tho last holo in four, Shaw a so finishing with a splendid 12ft. putt. The plavers were given an ovation. Shaw completed a great round in tho morning, doing eighteen holes in 68, which was 2 outside J. H. Kirkwood’s record on the same links a few years agoG. B. Forrest (Timaru). who fijnisheti third, again gave a consistent display, and but for a poor second round would have been hard to beat. J. A. Clements (Christchurch), who was level with Butters at the start of tho final round, had a bad run in the afternoon and finished fourth. Tho third stroke handicap was won bv A J Shaw (Napier), and tho fourth stroke handicap went to G. B.
