FRANCE v. AUSTRALIA J. CRAWFORD BEATS BOROTRA VISITORS WIN RUBBER B2 Telegraph.— Press association. Copyright. Melbourne, February 11. In the lawn tennis tests between France and Australia, in tho doubles, Hopman and Crawford, playing against Boussus and Brugnon, opened so well that it appeared they would quickly win the maten. The Australians took the first four games, but after that they could win only ono more in the two sets, the Frenchmen winning 6-4, 6—l. They made many mistakes, and failed to make the most of their opportunities, while at times they were absolutely outplayed. Both Frenchmen played well, and Boussus appeared to be a totally different man from the one who played on Thursday, his volleying being superb and his smashing effective. Brugnon was always reliable. CRAWFORD BRILLIANT. (Rec. February 12, 5.5 p.m.) Melbourne, February 12. The international tennis matches between Australia and France were continued in hot weather. In the men’s singles Borotra was beaten for the first time in Australia by J. Crawford (New South Wales), 6—l, 6 —4. Crawford played a magnificent game, frequently passing Borotra at the net, and at other times driving hard to his feet. Crawford lias never played better than he did in this match. He was extraordinarily severe on both hands. BOUSSUS EXTENDS O’HARA WOOD. P. O’Hara Wood (Victoria) beat C. Boussus, 6 —2, 3—6, B—6.8 —6. Play was even and brilliant in the earlier sets of the O’Hara AVood-Boussus match, and there were muny thrilling rallies, the Frenchman’s errors giving Wood some chances, of which he took full advantage. In tho final set Wood brought all bis reserve energy into play, and with match point in his favour, served a hot ace, which Hashed past the Frenchman, and won the match. SPECTACULAR DOUBLES. In. the doubles Borotra and Brugnon beat Patterson and Hopman, 4—6, 5—7, 6- 6—4, 7—5. The match was spectacular, with all the players at the top of their form. The Australians won the first two sets, but the visitors gradually made up tho leeway. The fifth set .was a thrilling game, and progressed evenly to threo all. "Kopman dropped his service in tho seventh game, and the Frenchmen won the next, giving them the lead, 5 —3. The Frenchmen held match point, but the Australians won the next three points for the game. Borotra served, but lost the game for five all, and the Frenchmen winning the next led G—s. Brugnon served the final game, and won the set, 7— 5, and the match. [lt will be noticed that th e singles matches are best of three sets, and the doubles match 'best of five sets. This arrangement has been made at the express wish of the Frenchman themselves, -“Forehand."] U.S.A. ASSOCIATION FAVOURS TWO TEAMS FOR DAVIS CUP (Rec. February 12, 11.5 p.m.) New York, February 11.
