DAMAGED BY FIRE

NAPIER BRIGADE’S GOOD SAVE. BY Telegraph.-Press Association. , Napier, February 9. An excellent save was made by the brigade in a fire in a two-storied wooden building in Hastings Street late last night. The brigade quenched the blaze in excellent time, so that only the rear portion was seriously damaged. The building was occupied by Air. K. Evans, a photographer, 'fung Lee, launderer, and the Savoy Cafe. Some of the occupiers were rescued by the brigade from the front verandah. The building is owned by the White Swan Brewery Co., and insured in the Phoenix Office for £SUO. SPECTACULAR BLAZE AT KAI. IWI. Dominion Special Service. Wanganui, February 9. At 3 o'clock this morning fire destroyed an eight-roomed house owned and ' occupied by Mrs. F. L. Jackson, of Kai Iwi. The blaze was spectacular and was seen for miles around. A band of willing helpers, headed by Mr. R. G. Taiboys, of Wanganui, soon assembled, but owing to the entire absence of water they were unable to eave the dwelling. The workers, however, were successful in saving all the furniture and most of the personal effects. A heavy dew prevented the grass burning. Mrs. Jackson and her five children were in the house at the time of the outbreak, the origin of which is only a matter for conjecture. It is possible that the fire started in the washhouse. The dwelling was built of wood and was of an unusual design, additions having been made. Insurances were £‘7so on the buildings and £450 on the furniture, both with the Northern Assurance Company. RAILWAY STATION DESTROYED. BY Telegraph.—Press aisociahon. Taihape, February 9. At Mataroa, eight miles north of Taihape, at 3 o’clock this morning, the railway station and Mr. Lamb’s grocery shop were burnt to the ground. It is suspected that the fire started in Lamb’s bakehouse. Mr. Lamb and family lost everything, and escaped in their night attire. The station books and documents were saved Business is being carried on in the goods shed.- The insurances are not yet available. The need for protection against fire loss is obvious. Consult the Mercantile and Genera! Insurance Company Ltd., Panama Street, Wellington.— Advt.
