BUILDING ACTIVITY

WELLINGTON’S RECORD YEAR TWO MILLION MARK IN SIGHT “The building figures for the half financial year indicate that the value of building work in the city for the completed twelve months is likely to exceed the record established last year,” states the “New Zealand Building Trades Journal” for November. “Constructional programmes involving big expenditure, including the new T. and G. Mutual building in Lambton Quay, now under way, have swelled the total for the past six months, which touches the seven figure mark, viz., £1,077,048. The total for the same period last year was, roughly, twothirds of that amount—£6B4,s22. In June and September the permits issued were of considerably larger value than those of the same months in the preceding year. At the present rate of progress the two million mark, and a new’ record, should be easily reached at the end of the year.” The comparative figures for the first six months of this year and last year, the “Journal” states, are as follow:—

During September 194 applications were received by the building superintendent for permission to erect, alter, or extend premises, and in 175 instances plans were examined and approved and permits issued. The detailed return for the month is as follows:—City, £177,346; Melrose, £34,847; Northland, £1900; Wadestown, £3220; Onslow, £9903; Karori, £11,841; Miramar, u£16,233. Total, £255,290. Lower Hutt figures for October are as follow:—50 wooden buildings (housing scheme), value £20,000; 18 wooden buildings, £18,015; 3 brick and concrete, £4025; .11 garages, £755; 12 additions and alterations, £2915; 3 shops, £2950; 2 sheds and outbuildings, £80; 1 kerbside pump, £150; total, £48,890.
