R.P.N.Y.C. HANDICAP RACES. Tiie teeming rain of Saturday afternoon did not prevent the Royal P ort * lc b° l9 P“ Yacht Club from holding the first of its series of club handicap races. A light southerly breeze as blowing, and the races were quite interesting. It was doubtless owing to the weather that but little, if any, interest, was taken in the results by anyone except the competitors themselves. Mr. J. Moffitt was the official starter. .. , . ... Three races were held during the attercoon, one for first-class boats, one tor boats of the second class, and one for yachts of under eighteen feet. Only two boats actually started in the first-class race; these, with their handicaps, were:— Viola <l4itain.) and Marangi (scr.). Ihe actual finishing times were: Viola. shr. 17min. 47sec., and Marangi 5.17.12. Viola s handicap, however, made her correct finishing time 5.3.17. The race was thus won by Viola, with Marangi in second position. In the race for boats of the second class, the following competed: Windward (scr.), Oyster (15niin.). Rawene (6mm.), Miro (smin.J, Nanette (Bmin.), Mana (scr.), and lolanthe (smin.). Of these boats Miro did not finish, while the others finished at the following times:-Windward, shr. 32min. 6sec.: Oyster, 5.50.25; Rawene, 5.40; Nanette. 5.49: Mana 5.24; lolantne, 5.25.12. Allowing for the handicaps given to the yachts, the corrected finishing times were; Windward, 5.32.5; Oyster, 5,35.25; Rawene, 5.34; Nanette. 5.41; Mana, 5.24; and lolanthe, 5.20.12. The race was thus won by lolanthe, with Mana in the second position. The course for the sec-ond-class races was from the starting line between Clyde Quay Wharf and king’s Wharf, to Somes’s Rock buoy, fiom there to the southern blinker, and thence back to the starting line. The course for the race for yachts of under eighteen feet was from the starting line to Point Jerningham buoy, from there to the Coromandel buoy, and from there to the starting point. The competitors went twice round the course. Only three competitors started—Wellesley (scr.). Geisha (6min.), and All Black (scr.). All Black was leading when Geisha, which was in the second position, capsized. At ’’lis stage the boats were in the vicinity of the yacht Surprise, but the race was abandoned. Wellesley’s chances of win•’ng the race, had it been completed, were spoiled by her gettin- away ten minutes late.
