TRAFFIC BY ROAD
BUSES FOR RAILWAY ACQUIRED
From Monday next the thirteen motorbuses which have been operating between Napier and Hastings will be controlled by the Railway Department, negotiations for the acquisition of the vehicles having been satisfactorily completed. The existing staffs have been re-engaged by the Department, the timetables will be continued as at present, and the fares will remain the same. The appearance of the buses will not be altered for the time being, but when repainting becomes necessary the new standard colour of railway carriages— Midland Lake—will be adopted. More than ordinary importance attaches to this step of the Railway Department, since it represents the first fruits of the decision to comhat bus competition, and at the same time provide the method of transport for which the public have shown a preference. This policy, it is expected, will be developed as the necessity arises.
