BRITISH SAILORS’ SOCIETY
Great enthusiasm was shown by the large audience for the concert given bs the men of the Tamaroa at the British Sailors’ Society’s rooms, 57 Cuba btreet. ou Tuesday. The whole programme was arranged by the Tamaroa, assisted by two local entertainers. Hack item was greeted with applause, the performers bavin" to respond with encore after encore 'The chairman for the evening was the Bev. D. Campbell, of Dunedin, who spoke of the aims and objects of the sbeietv in his short opening address Supper was in the hands of the ladies of the assembly, and was banded round during the interval. At tho close of the evening the chairman proposed a hearty vote of thanks to tho performers, and also to tho workers qf the society, who are all volunteers, and these were carried with acclamation and Jcheers The band of the Tamaroa rendered yeoman service during the evening. Items were contributed by the following:— Messrs. Petherick, Bevan, Leathley, Lines, Scott. Cotipland. Campbell. Barrv, Craddock, and J. Lockwood. Mr. Phillips was the accompanist for the evening. On Wednesday tho mid-week social was held, the rooms being again filled with the men who followed the sea Songs, games, anil instrumental items were indulged in, and very pleasant time spent till 10.30. Sti.ppei was handed round by the young ladies of the society during the evening.
