PUBLIC BURNING OF OLD MATTHESSES .-; 7’l ( On November 5, a grand burning of old mattresses was held on the summit of Mount Eden, - - Auckland. Nearly 700 old mattresses formed a huge bonfire—these mattresses had all been collected as the result of a novel scheme arranged by the makers of the "Durodown" K. Mattress. The idea ol tbis scbeme was to help P e °P le to rid of their old mattresses, buy new “Duror- vX downs,” and yet get something for their old ones. The most noted health authorities, the world over, have all agreed that old bedding is unhealthy, and moreover a harbourage and breeding place of germs: so the disposal of those old mattresses was in the interests of hygiene. Ordinarily people hang on to a mattress until the two sides are touching something had to "V be done to make them see it was profitable to buy a new Durodown. Such an Easy Arrangement, Too ! All people did was ring some furniture dealer (any furniture store) to send a carrier for their °l d mattress, or mattresses. When the carrier called he gave them a coupon for every mattress received. These coupons were marked £1 and 10/- respectively the £1 ones being given for double, or three-quarter mattresses, and the 10/- for singles. Each coupon represented a discount for the amount marked thereon, off the purchase of a new Duradown.’ Mattresses came in from everywhere, and as a result there was a huge pile at the bonfire. A definite guarantee was giver, that every Mattress sent in would be burnt —and this was faithfully fulfilled. Another Burning To be held in Wellington Because people showed that they realised the necessity of getting rid of old, germ-breeding, lumpy, unrestful bedding, Howard Abbott, Ltd., intend to hold a similar burning in Wellington —but this cannot take place until November 5, next year. So watch out for the first am nouncement —take advantage of this novel and profitable scheme. The Durodown Mattress Made by Howard Abbott, Ltd. ::: In *e New Sealed Wrapping.
