SLOT TELEPHONES RAIDED
EXPENSIVE HUNTS FOR CRIMINALS Dominion Special. Christchurch. November IS. Thieves lately have broken open a number of slot telephones in Christchurch. During race week alone about eight boxes suffered, the fronts being burst off the iron boxes, and the cashboxes inside being abstracted. As each cash-box holds from 300. to 400 pennies, a thief making off with several, would probablv gather in a fairly good stun in a night. This type of theft has been occurring periodicallv for several years now, and the limits for (he criminals have cost the Post and Telegraph. Department hundreds of pounds. To catch one thief here recently, the Department had to expend nearly £5OO The reason for this is that the Department has to pay the Police Department for its trouble in apprehending or attempting to apprehend the thieves. This is due to the fact that the Post and Telegraph Department is supposed to maintain its own detective force, but does not do so, as the Post and Telegraph men arc quite unarmed, and it is not considered fair to have, them run the risk of bodily harm.
