NEW ENGINES
RAILWAY WORKSHOPS * ACTIVITY By Telegraph.—Press association. Christchurch, November 18. Ten big locomotives of the AB class have just been completed at the Addington workshops. Each weighs .84 tons, and carries 3500 gallons of water. The locomotives are of the same type as the “Passcliendaele,” the big memorial engine which will be remembered by visitors to the Dunedin Exhibition. The “Passcliendaele” was the first of this class to be built at Addington. This is the engine which will draw the Royal train on the occasion of the visit of the Duke and Duchess of York. The Railway Department’s building programme also provides for the construction of ten WAB engines at Hillside. Each of these weighs 72 tons, but they are more powerful than the heavier AB, and will, be used between Dunedin and Oamaru. The engines from Addington will be distributed over the South Island. With the new engines from Addington and Hillside the Department will be able to tide over the period in which the workshops will be undergoing reconstruction
