SCHOOL EXERCISE BOOKS
OTAGO BOARD’S DECISION. Dominion Special. Dunedin, November 17. The Education Board this moriiing considered a letter from the Education Department suggesting that all the boards should call tenders for the supply of exercise books, the cost to be met by advertisements. The Hon. D. T. Fleming moved: “That this board, desirous of enabling school ■ xerciso books being supplied lit the lowest possible cost, has on two previous occasions accepted tenders from firms for the supply of free exercise books on the linos suggested by the Department, but in each case the contractor failed to sign or proceed with the lontract. The board reaffirms the desirability of the supply of stationary' free cr at the lowest possible cost to the school *nd is agreeable to the suggestion of the Department in this connection end urges: (1) The usual quality of paper for school purposes be used: (2) scrutiny of advertisements to be inserted in the <xercise books; (3) no selection rf tchools or in schools to be made in the supply of free stationery,” Mr. Fleming said that occasion illy one heard of the exorbitant prices charged for school books and stationery. Ho pointed out that tho hoard had lists of the books required and the prices, and suggested that where books. could not be obtained locally the board should be prepared to supply hooks cr rfationnry at listed prices cither to pupils or to classes. Tho chairman (Mr. J. Wallace): You nre drawing attention to the fact that the board passed such a resolution some time ago. The motion was carried.
