AUCKLAND COUNCILLORS’ SUPPERS
AUDIT OFFICE TAGS COST Dominion Special. Auckland, November 11. •‘The Audit Office knows of no authority of law lor the charge of £75 14s. bd. against the district fund for providing suppers for councillors.” This impersonal tag, with its judicial phraseology, has been attached by the Au-ditor-General to the Auckland City Council accounts for the past fiscal year. For some years now it has been the practice of councillors at their fortnightly meetings to take literally the behest that they should pass-from labour to refreshment. In a room adjacent to the Council Chamber, tea, coffee, and sandwiches have been served after the council meetings to fortify the councillors on their homeward journevs. Another tag attached to the Audit certificate draws attention to the charge of £llO being debited to the tramway revenue account in respect of band performances at the Zoo. In the opinion of the Audit Office this charge was unwarranted.
The reading of the tag concerning suppers was greeted with chuckles from the council at its meeting tin's evening. The matter was referred to the Finance and Legal Committee.
