The Romans were the originators of the Christmas tree, though their ceremony had little to do with the modern idea'of the Christmas spirit. They began bv hanging small masks of Bacchus, the god of wine, upon the grape vines, in the belief that the snot would become mmsuallv fruitful. The occasion was made one of mcrrv-niaking and dissipation. After the advent of Christianity it was converted into the . Christmas tree celebration.
