A PROJECTED TOUR
BY THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. Id respect to tho remarks made, by a correspondent in Saturday’s Dominion respecting the proposed trip through (he North Island, the chairman of the Chamber of Commerce (Mr. 11. I>. Bennett) stated on Saturday that he saw not the slightest reason why the project should have been referred |o in such a flippant manner, nor could ho conceive that (ho proposal itinerary, originally very kindly prepared by Mr. .1. W. CoTinsj of the Toiiiist and Commerce Department, should l:a regarded in the light of a joke. It was true that in tho circular a 'o’ier was omitted in the word Rangitaiki, but tho person with any geographical intidligetic-' would realise, at once that Kangitikei was not meant. A laboured joke was made about a visit to White Island, when nothing of the kind was mentioned. 11. merely said that the fifth day of tho tour wan'd be spout in travelling from Gisborne, via tho Motu to Opotiki. and, by way of information to commereial mon, ii was mentioned that AA'h'lo Island (known for its sulphur deposits’, was thirty ini't-s distant from Opotiki. Mr. Bennett stated fuilho”. by way of oxp'analinn. that au attempt was made to bring off the trip tn February but flint failed, but some momlora thought it might bo arranged for May. though personally he eansidi-red it was 100 late in tho year. It was not likely to come off in any ease, as the num hot of applicants who had communicated with the secretary of (ho chamber (Mr H. S. Fairchi'd) did not warrant it. The date for the closing of such applications is to-morrow, and providing there were a snffieient number willing to make tho trip, it. would commence on Muy 19.
