DEPRESSION IN PAPUA
AGGRAVATED BY NAVIGATION ACT. Sydney, December 27. Judge Murray, Lieutenant-Governor of Papua, sta'-e's that the depressing period in Papua has been aggravated since the Navigation Act was passed, as trade relations aro confined practically to Sydney, througli which Papuan purchases and produce must pass to and from England. Besides being a detour of two thousand miles, this involves extra expenditure for storage and transhipment. Under such conditions agricultural expansion is impossible. Even if the right to trade with the outside markets is restored, it may be too late, ns trade, though buoyant and flourishing a few months ago, has now almost ceased to exist. Unless some remedy is forthcoming, Australia will pay a heavy price for its action—the price of the development of Papua.—Press Assn.
