COLONEL ESSON APPOINTED. Colonel J. J. Esson has been appointed to tho post of Secretary to. the Treasury, which was rendered vacant by the promotion of Colonel G. F. C. Campbell to the office of Controller and Auditor-Gen-eral. ' 7 . . Colonel Esson began his career in the Public (Service by joining tho General Post Office at Picton in 1881. From the Picton -Post Office he went to New Plymouth, Marton, and Wellington. In Wellington he was transferred to the accounts branch, where he took charge nf the clearing room. After 25 years’ service in tho Post and Telegraph Department he was transferred to tho Treasury, where ho held successively the following positions.—Clerk in charge, pay and pensions branch; chief clerk and inspector; accountant and assistant secretary. The new secretary had long service in the Volunteer, and Territorial Forces. Ho was commander of the old Wellington City Rifles, and later of the sth (Wellington) Regiment. When war broke out lie volunteered for active service and was selected for duty on the Headquarters Staff, being appointed Assistant Quartermaster-General to the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces. He.saw service on Gallipoli as Assistant Qnarter-master-Gcner.al of the New Zealand and Australian Division. lie was mentioned in dispatches, and was afterwards awarded the Order of St. Michael and S,. George for military services. After the evacuation of Gallipoli he wiis appon - Colonel-Commandant of the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces m Egypt. Later, Colonel Esson was recalled to New Zealand for special duty in connection with finance .and defence. He acted as Assistant Public. Bervice Commissioner in connection with tho regrading of the Public Service Colonel Esson was born and educated in Marlborqugh, where Ins people are well known. ________
