RIFLE SHOOTING

• SATURDAY’S MATCHES DETAILS OF THE SHOOTING Dull weather prevailed on Saturday for the week-end competitions of local rifle clubs, but there qas a g°°d attendance at Trentham. Karori, Suburbs, and Upper Hutt fired at 500 and 600 yards on tlie Seddon range, and Petone and Old Navals held their shoots at 600 yards on the Sommervillo. There was a light southerly wind which varied from 3 to 1 o’clock, and required careful watching, and also a few light showers during tho afternoon, but taken on the whole it was a. good shooting day. The notable performances were those of F. Ching fKarori) and R. H. Nioholl (Petone). The clubs report as follow: — PETONE CLUB. Twenty-eight members of the Petone Club took part in the first competition of the third series and the seventh for championship. Conditions called for twenty shots, in two shoots of ten each with sighter, at 600 yards. Results:— A Division. 600 yards, first second shoot, shoot. Tl.

* Spoon winners. PARAPARAUMU CLUB. The Paraparaumu Rifle. Club fired a match at 900 and 1000 yards for the E. Weggery Trophy under adverse weather conditions, members going down on tho 900 yards mound in pouring rain with an exceptionally strong wind, which would change Sometimes before one co-uld press a trigger, from 16 loft to 5 right. Tho rain eased off before the 1000 yards range was reached, but here again merry hers knew what it was to be grateful for an outer.

UPPER HUTT CLUB. The Upper Hutt Rifle Club-fired last Saturday .at ranges 800 and 900 yards. The day was perfect, but there was a 20 degrees right wind blowing throughout tho shoot. Scores:—

OLD NAVALS CLUB. The Old Navals Defence Rifle Club fired the third match of their second series on the Trentham range on Saturday afternoon for prices donated by Messrs. K. I. and A. Duncan, Captain E. DI. Bell, Colonel C. Cooper. A. L. Johnson, J. W. Murphy, F. McFarland, J. Manning, and Captain A. V. HaleMunro. The conditions were 20 shots at 600 yards fired in two- rounds of 10 shots each, results of which aa-e as follow: — 600 600

The club also fired four teams’ matches for the C. W. Martin challenge badges, the holders (Rifleman Pitt's team) were successful in defending them after a very close contest, resulting in the runningup team making the same total score. Rifleman Pitt’s team resulted as follows: E. Evans 82 B. Goldfinch 75 •T. Pitt 73 A. Guise 63 Total 293 Rifleman Conibear’s team finished with the same \otal, but were unable to defeat tho holders.
