NEW CEMETERY FOR JOHNSON-
VILLE
The monthly meeting of the Afakara County Council was held yesterday. There were present: Councillors S. Bryant (chairman), E. Windley, L. D. Nairns, S. Bowler, and J. Alonagahan. The chairman reported that he and Air. Beach, the county clerk, had attended a conference wit'h representatives of the Johnsonville Town Board concerning the purchase of a new cemetery at Johnsonville. The conference had decided to make an offer to the Diocesan Board to purchase an area of nearly seven acres at £BO an acre. Nothing could be done until the Diocesan Board had replied to tho offer. The matter - was urgent, _as Alakara County round about Johnsonville was growing rapidly and the old cemetery already held as many graves as could be placed there. kt was decided to proceed with the purchase of an area for a new cemetery, in conjunction with the Johnsonville Town Board, provided the question of the cost of the land could be agreea upon. Dr. J. E. Faris, health officer, reported that, at the council’s request an inspection of the sanitary condition of the Alaori pa at Takapuwahai had been made by Inspector Reed, of the Health Department. The general condition of tup pa was satisfactory. AVith regard to the statement that. children suffering from tuberculosis were at present attending school at Porirua, the health officer stated that 'lie had gone into the matter fully, and had found that since November,' 1920, five cases of phthisis liad boon notified from the pa—three children and two adults. AVith regard to the children attending school, he found that in each case the disease had been arrested. and they were not in an infectious condition. None of the Natives had recently visited Ohau, the scene of tho recent typhoid outbreak. The clerk reported that rates were outstanding on lands held by discharged soldiers. After discussion, on the motion of the chairman, seconded by Councillor Bowler, it was decided to make application to the Commissioner of Crown Lands to ascertain the position of outstanding rates on land reverting to the Crown under the Discharged Soldiers’ Settlement Act, and if the property could be loaded wit’h the amount of rates due.
