“WHOLESALE POACHING”

TR.OVX IN THE AKATARAWA It'was reported to the council of tho Acclimatisation Society last night that wnolesale poaching was going on in the Akatarap-a River. One man had reported to a member of the council that he had seen 27 fish taken out of one hole, as the result of tho exploding of a dynamite cartridge. It was also reported that a numbe;- of dynamite cartridges and some gelignite had been discovered by the side of the road in "such a. position that anyone might have found and used

"Tt Is a curious thing,” commented the chairman, “that wherever any of these gangs of men are employed on road and bridge works in the country, wholesale poaching goes on. I believe that there are now no fish tn the Afeatarawa owing to tho use of explosives by men employed on the road there.” On the motion of Mr. Se?d it was resolved to write to the Minister of Public Works drawing his attention to the matter, and requesting him to urgo the officers of' his_ Department to prevent. poaching, or at least to see that Government explosives were not used illegally er left lying about promiscuously to the danger of the public.
