A wireless message received by the Union Company from the Waiotapu advised that the vessel would arrive at Apia yesterday from Vancouver and San Francisco. The Waiotapu will subsequently visit Auckland, Wellington. Lyttelton. New Plymouth. Melbourne. Adelaid, and Sydney to discharge her freight. THE BLACKBALL COLLIERS. Tho Ngahere. which left Wellington on Thursday evening with coal for Napier, is timed to leave Gisborne for Lyttelton on Monday. The Ngatoro will leave Lyttelton for-the Chatham Islands to-day, and on Monday night the Ngakuta is expected to leave Portland for Greymouth.
THE SYDNEY SERVICE. Two Sydney steamers, both of which cleared the Australian port on morning, are due to arrive in Wellington on Monday. . , . j The R M/S. Mnrama, which took her ao parturo’at 10 a.m., is expected to make port on Monday. She is scheduled to sail tho following afternoon for Francisco, via Rarotonga and Papeete. The Manuka left her berth an hour later with 182 passengers for Wellington, where she is due to arrive on She will sail on the return trip on lliursday. "A BRIGHTER OUTLOOK.” According to the Dunedin correspondent of the "Lyttelton Times,”, there appears to be a brighter outlook m the shipping world as far ns New Zealand is concerned. During the past few months, observes the writer, several of the Union Company’s steamers, which had been placed on the lay-up berth owing to the falling off in trade, have been recommissioned. This is regarded in. shipping circles as a very hopeful sign and the opinion is freely expressed that shipping will be back to normal in a few months time There are still over twenty of the Union Company’s steamers laid up at various New Zealand end Australian ports. Some of these will probably not be recommissioned for some time, but it is . eI " nected that the serviceable cargo-earners will be placed in the various trades as things improve. , - The latest Union steamer to he put ”} f o active service is the Waikouaitl. wli’ch. left Lyttelton on Wednesday evening for Sviiney nnd Newcastle. The Wa'konaitl will in future, trade between Sydney. Bluff, Dunedin, and Lyttelton. She is a most suitable vessel for the service, and has taken the nlaee of the Wanaka. Cooper It is expected that the next Red Funnel steamer to be recommissioned from the idle fleet at. Port Chalmers will be the Maori. This vessel is at present, undergoing extensive overhaul and renuirs. and will subsequently re-enter the Wellington-fA-ttelton service. There are eleven vessels of the Union Company s fleet lying idle at Port Chalmers. PORT HACKING’S CARGO. The Port Hacking, which made port at Auckland early on Thursday from New York after a passage of 33 days, has 4000 tons of general cargo to be distributed as follow: 640 tons for Auckland. ,00 tons Wellington. 350 tone Lyttelton. 370 tons Dunedin. 1000 tons Melbourne, and 1000 tons for Sydney. Included in the cargo are 8000 cases of oil and farm implements. Good weather was met throughout the trip except on the last two days, when the steamer ran into, a moderate westerly gale with high seas. "Captain A. E. WAITEMATA DUE TO-D'AY. Due from Auckland to-day. the M'aitemata is timed to sail for Lyttelton and Dunedin 0:1 Monday. SHOAL REPORTED. z Tho master of the Navua has reported that while on a voyage from Fiji to Tonga lie passed close to the chaitered position cf the active submarine volcano in latitude 20deg. 15min. south, and longitude 175 deg. 31mm. west. The light conditions being perfect and the sea calm, he distinctly observed a patch .°f Rmcoloured water, which looked suspiciously like a shoal. He recommends masters to avoid this position until further investigation has been made. CANADIAN SPINNER FOR NEW YORK. The Canadian Spinner, which has been loading at southern ports for New Ilork Montreal, and Boston, sailed from Bluff last evening for New York. MAKURA ARRIVES AT AUCKLAND. The H.M.S. Makura, from Vancouver, made port at Auckland at 6 o'clock yesterday morning. 'She is set down to resume her voyage to Sydney at noon today. THE RIVERINA’S MOVEMENTS. The Huddart-Parker steamer Uivcrlna. which has been discharging cargo at Auckland, was to leave for Sydney at midnight yesterday. Tho Tauranga Harbour Board notifies that a new channel between the lower harbour and the town wharves has been dredged, and marked, and is now in use by vessels visiting the port. Buoys have been placed in various positions. Tho John is now expected back ironi Timaru to-morrow, and will shortly lay up for her annual overhaul. The Corinna is timed to sail to-day tor Now Plymouth, via- Picton and Nelson, taking cargo for the first-named port. The Cahn is due back with produce from southern ports to-day week, and will subsequently proceed to Wanganui. The Komata is expected to arrive irom Westport to-morrow, and is set down to make the return trip on Tuesday. ‘ The Hinemoa yesterday completed working the lighthouses at Farewell Spit, and should return to Wellington early next week. , , , , „ The Katoa. from Auckland and Napier, is due at Wellington about Monday, and vvijl proceed hence to Lyttelton and Dnnedin. . The Alexander should arrive on Inceday next from Picton, Nelson, Westport., and Greymouth. ... The departure of the Wingatui tor Napier and Auckland, with cargo lor the latter port, has been postponed until toTho Kanna is now timed to sail to-day tor Lyttelton and Dunedin, taking cargo for the latter port. The Kamo, with coal and timber from Westport, is now expected to arrive here to-morrow. The Kakapo with a cargo of coal from the same port is also due tomorrow. The steamer Verentia is timed to leave Now York for the four main New Zealand and Australian ports on November 8. Mr. T. A. MacPherson has joined tho Kowhai as third mate, vice Mr. R. Andcrson.
