Tho Union Company’s Maheno made port at 11.20 o’clock yesterday morning, and berthed at 4.40 p.m. The vessel left Syduey at 3 30 p.m. on October 19, in moderate weather, with strong head winds prevailing, and a smooth sea running. Weather conditions showed ia. marked improvement on Saturday, and light breezes and favourable sous were experienced until the nor’-wester off the heads w'as encountered. Tho voyage was uneventful. An arrival in port yesterday was the Union Company’s Paloonw from Melbourne direct. Exceptionally fine weather marked the vessel’s departure at 4.15 p m. on October 18, and moderately smooth seas were experienced until Friday’, when a slight swell was met. A ’southern exchange reports that tho Yamashida Kiscu Kaisha, of Japan, has decided to inaugurate a regular cargo steamer service between Pacific Coast ports and Australia, commencing with tho Yehime 'Maru, which will leave. Seattle this month. Tho company's steamers will load at Seattle, Portland, and San Francisco, and will call at New Zealand on the way to Australia. Tho Yehime Maru will be followed by the Yushida Maru 11, and other steamers of the line will leave for Australia nt monthly intervals. The Yamashida Kiscn kaisha. Ltd., of Kobe, is one of the largest shipping companies of Japan, owning a Meet of 480,000 tons. Hitherto the only vessels of tho company to visit Attstralia, have been chartered, but the company has now evidently decided to make a permanent bid for the American-Aus-tralian trade, which is now done largely by British and American shipping companies. Mr. T Roxburgh has been appointed Melbourne agent, and Mr. B. H Wiltshire will represent the company in Sydney. Messrs. Heather. Roberton. Ltd., will be the Auckland agents lor the enterprise. The first steamer will arrive nt Auckland on November 20. THE PIAKO AT AUCKLAND. The New Zealand Shipping Company’s steamer Piako arrived at Auckland from Liverpool on Friday afternoon, and after medical inspection, berthed at the Queen’s Wharf. She left Liverpool on September 8. called nt Newport News for bunker, and cleared the Panama Canal on September 27 The voyage was uneventful; lino weather was experienced until she was well south of the equator, when strong southerly winds and rough seas were encountered. Her cargo consists principally of coal, whisky, and iron work. The Piako lias about- 10,010 tons of cargo for New Zealand, of which about 2000 tons aro for Auckland Tho coal consists of about 2500 tons to bo discharged at Bluff for the New Zealand railways. The Piako is duo at Wellington on October 31. • lONIC LEAVES SOUTHAMPTON. A cable message lias been received by the Shaw-Savill Line to the effect that, the Tonic, en route for Wellington. The Waitcmata. which is expected to .arrive hero front Auckland on Thursday, will bo dispatched the following day for Lyttelton and Dunedin. KAITOA FOR NELSON. Messrs. Bannatyne and Co. advised last night that on account of the. races at Trenthain to-day the departure of the Kaitoa for Nelson would be postponed until 7 o’clock this evening

The Kaiapoi, which arrived from Auckland and Napier on Saturday night, will rail for West Coast to-morrow, taking cargo for Westport, Greymouth, and Hokitika, The following vessels were expected to be within range of the. undermentioned wireless stations last night:—Awanul—Wiakawa. Iris, Niagara, Makura, Manuka-. Auckland—A rahui’K, Flora. Waimana, Canadian Conqueror, Kaitanaka. Wellington—Corinthic, Tainui. Awarua—Aldebaran, Wingatui, Ngakuta, Port Hacking. Chathams—Mahia. The Komata, which arrived from Westport last right, Is scheduled to make the return trip, taking passengers, about Wednesday. According to the “Nriv Zealand Herald" there are at present 27 captains in the employ of the Union Steam Ship Company who are without shins owing to their vessels being laid up. These masters are ashore on full pay.
