THE GAMBLING SPIRIT
GOVERNMENT URGED TO lAIPOSE RESTRICTION.
By Telegraph—Press Association. Wanganui, October 13. Al the Baptist Conference to-day, the; Rev. J. J. North spoke strongly against - the gambling spirit prevalent in New; Zealand, and the following resolution 1 was passed:—"That tho conference pro-' fests emphatically against the waste of. tho public’s time and money at such a time of crisis and stringency over the proposed extension of gambling facilities: the- conference believes that the •Min-ming volume of public gambling, which has increased 400 per cent, in the last few years, is an evil omen, and a menace to national stability and national character; the conference Ix-lievcs that, the extension of permits and the creation of new clubs proposed by the Racing Coininission aro directly opposed to tho interests of tlie Dominion, and calls u]X)n the Government to givo a lead to Parliament and the people in tho direction of a decided restriction.”
