SHANTUNG PROBLEM
JAPAN’S COURSE OF ACTION NOT DECIDED. Tokio, October 10. The Cabinet Council has not yet dacided as to Japan’s course in view of the Chinese refusal to accept the Shantung settlement. Three courses aro open, according to tho Foreign Office, namely, to drop tho matter entirely and maintain the status quo pending overtures from Peking; second, to refor tho matter to tho Washington Conference; and third, to discuss tho matter at Washington outsido tho conference. —Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. PRESIDENT HARDING MAY BE ASKED TO MEDIATE. i Tokio, October 10. Official circles think that Japan is likely to request President Harding to mediate personally in the Shantung controversy between. Japan and China, without reference to the Armament Conference. The Diplomatic Advisory Council to Cabinet is expected to consider this course during tho coming week’s meeting. Japan is expected to ignore China’s latest Noto, leaving things as they aro, either until outside mediation settles them or China asks for a resumption of negotiations.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
