STANDARD GAUGE RECOMMENDED Melbourne, October 13. The Uniform Gauge Commission has unanimously recommended 4ft. as the standard railway gauge for Australia. The cost of tho Main Trunk line from Fremantle to Brisbane Is estimated at £18,000,000, and the cost of covering all lines, except in Tasmania, nt £57,000,000. ' —Press Assn. [There are 22.000 miles of Government railways in Australia. Of tho total 5149 miles aro sft. 3in. gauge, 5881 miles 4ft. BJin. gauge, and 10,866 miles 3ft. Gin. gauge. Tho Great Western line, owned by tho Federal .Government, has been built on tho 4ft. 81in. gauge.]
