CLAIM FOR A REWARD. ( A suit arising out of a criminal action heard in the Supremo Court came beforo' Mr. F.-K. Hunt, SAl.,,when Albert Os-i man (Mr. H. H. Cornish) claimed *2s' from Francis Charles J. Olsen, photo-; grapher (Mr. F. Haigh), this being the amount of a reward which, it was alleged Olsen was willing to pay for tho recovery ■ of a wallet containing *286. It was stated that in May of this yonr Osman was employed as a trimmer on the steamer Matatua. The defendant visited the ship, and during kjs etay on the vessel lost tho wallet. Ho informed the ship’s company of tho loss, and offered a reward of A 5. Osman made, eo it was alleged, a diligent search, and ultimately found tho v.'allet. He then set out for Vivian Street, where tho defendant re-: sided, for the purpose of claiming ths; reward and returning tho wallet, but on, his way he met a number of his numd’ i from the ship arid stayed with them. Tire, result was that he was arrested for drunkenness. He was subsequently i charged with ihe theft of the money,.) and was found not guilty by a. jury ; in tho Supremo Court. Mr. Cornish urged that ns Osman was : on his way to claim the reward, and os! the police had acted as his agents. in handing tho money back, he was entitled) to tho reward. I Mr. Haigh, for tho defendant, contended" that it was essential thar ptaintiff should have completely carried out the return of the money before he'could w>, come entitled to the reward.. The Magistrate upheld this contcn-.. tion, and gave judgment for defendantwith costs. REPAIRS TO MOTOR-CAR. T. Wagg and Co., Masterton (Mr. R. E Gillon). proceeded against J. Wright,; a "retired farmer (Mr.- IV. Perry) to re-1 cover *242 19s. 9d. for repairs and fittings; supplied to a motor-car. Tho defendant; counter-claimed for A 3 19s. Gd.; ftff goods alleged to Tiavo been taken from the car. Evidence was heard, and at its close Mr. E. Pago, SIM., gave judgment for the plaintiffs for *234 os. Bd., with costs amounting to *2lO Is. The counterclaim was disallowed.
