DUNEDIN MEETING M'LEAN STAKES TO PROSPERITY. By Telegraph.—Special Correspondent. Dunedin, October 13. The spring meeting of the Dunedin Jockey Club opened to-day in dull weather. There was no the course was in excellent order. The totalisators handled £22,801, as compared with 5£26,244 10s. for the corresponding day last year. There were seven starters in the Spring Hurdles, and the public supported Good Start, Whipcord, and Manawaponga in that order. The favourite made the running for a mile and a half, when he came down. This left Hylans in comniand, but Whipcord came with a late run, and got tnet verdict by a head. Staff Officer was a poor third, and Painploma next. Twelve started in the Afaungatua Handicap. The Reaver and the imported mare Glentruin were most in demand. Galway was first out, but the favourite was in front with a furlong gone, and, going on, won with the utmost e-ise. Sembric boat Glentruin for third place, 'vith Bebeliead and Galway next. The best field that has ever contested the event paraded in the M'Lcan Stakes. Manny Kittle was the only absentee. The Chokebore bracket, Swallow Flight and Balderdash were made favourite, with IVartune and Prosperity also well supported. From a fair start Wartime was first noticeable, but with half the distance gone Prosperity was in the van, followed by Wartime and Red Kris. The two first-named fought out the finish, Prosperity prevailing by a short neck. Six lengths further back camo Kilroe, who ran very green, and then followed Red Kris, Pickaninny. and Waitoa. Balderdash fell with only three-parts of a furlong gone, nnd if she hud stood up the race seemed to bo in her keeping. The winner was bred at Waikanne by Mr. lan Duncan, who offered the present owner, Mr. W. Taylor, lOCgns. on his bargain after the yearling sales last November. The Mosgiel Handicap was a good betting race, Warlove, Alias Muriel, and Clean Sweep being evenly backed. From a good start, Clean Sweep and Warlove were the first to break the line, but going out of the straight Macduff was. in front with Warlove. Marching Order, and Radial next, Bonnie Maid being at the tail of the field. Along the back (Tie order was the same, but once into the straight Warlove took charge, attended by Radial, while Clean Sweep and Eleus moved up. Warlove held her advantage, and won by two lengths. Clean Sweep cut down Radial, and finishod second, but had no chance with the winner. Eleus was fourth, with Rorke’s Drift and Miss Muriel next. J. Andrews’s handling of Miss Muriel was questioned, but the explanation offered was accepted. The bracket Pluto and Valdamo wa? made an odds-on favourite for the Trial Stakes, and they finished .first and second. Bluff was third, and Kerry Star fourth. On his gallop to-day, Pluto must have a big say in the Guineas on Saturday. Palestrina was made a very hot favourite in the Electric Handicap, while the only other inquired for was Meteorite. Michaela was first out, but Corn Rigs soon ran to the front, and coming into the straight the order was Corn Rigs, Ilineamaru, Pallah, Palestrina, and Michaela. A furlong from home Palestrina challenged, but Corn Rigs was not to be denied, and won by two lengths, Wallah beating Palestrina by a head for second money. Silver Peak was fourth. All started in the Taroilia Handicap, Te Kuri, St. Easel, and Kerb being most supported. Kerb and Te Kuri, who got a bad passage, were always in front, and the former won by three lengths. Humboldt was a fair third, Mantua fourth, and St. Easel next. Sunny Loch was made the hottest favourite of the day, and at the finish he ■ won the October Weltor Handicap in the easiest possible* fashion. Kilcullen was second and Twinkle third, with Link Up next.

NOTES AND COMMENTS ' By Gluncox. A final reminder is given that acceptances for tho AVcllington meeting, together with forfeits for the Champion Plato, close to-nigbt at 9 o’clock. The Dunedin meeting will bo concluded to-morrow. Entries for all events at the Auckland Racing Club’s spring meeting close tonight. Tho public was well on the mark in selecting the winners at AVingatui yesterday, where more than half the card went to the favourites. Prior to going south on AA'ednesday, R. J. Alason stated that Cupidon‘s efforts for the present season would he confined to weight-for-ago races. The .Masterton Racing Club's spring mooting will open to-day. and will be concluded on Saturday. Tho first event on tho card is the Hack Hurdles. Kyoto, a winner at Feilding. and Sir Rosebery nmv be tho best of those engaged. There are several two-year-olds engaged in tho Trial Stakes, hut whether they will bo forward enough to successfullj r engage the elder division over five "furlongs is an open question. Edendalo, a place-getter at Otaki, seems to he on the imnrove. and may go out favourite.
Tho Flying Handicap is a very open event. Printemps. 7st. 131 b., will bo ridden by an apprentice, and will only carry 7st. 61b. At this weight he reads very alI raetively. and will bo well suited by the long straight. Riintnra would only have to reproduce his Wanganui May form to have a chance, while BirkiS,
who will also get a 71b. allowance, is highly thought of. Most people thought the Awapuni gelding won at Otaki on the second day,, though the judge gave the verdict to Nursing Sister. Soldier’s Love, second at Hastings, is also to bo considered favourably, but on all form Printemps is entitled to the most respect. Spook. 9st. 91b. in the Lawn Handicap, may not be able to concede 211 b. to Bploved. Hallowvonia and Spare Moments are both useful sorts. Maioha, 9st. 91b., in tho Masterton Cup, is reported to bo an unlikely starter, and Verbosity has been scratched on account of lameness. Bonnie Heather cannot bo ready, and Bonetter did not strip well at Hastings. Halifax is without a race, but Kilgour, Esperance, and Idle Talk should all go well The pick of the Lansdowne Handicap is Calmisia, who defeated Tinihanga at Wanganui, and the lafter has since been prominent in all her races. Tho Speaker will have a big following in tho Grandstand Handicap, as his rohandicap will probably be equalised by the apprentice allowance. \Var Baby will only have to carry 7st. 21b., and should go well. The Farewell Handicap lias drawn the biggest field of the day. An inside position at the barrier for Paphian, Kilreid, or Kikini would tend to make any of this trio favourite. R. J. Mason, the trainer of the A..T.C. Derby winner, Cupidon, has prepared tho winners of 29 Derbies. The list 1s as follows:—C.J.C. Derby: Maxim, Roots Grey’, Medallion, Stepniak, Bluefire, Uniform, Multiform, Altair, Menschikoff, Orloff, Nightfall, Noctuiform, Danube. Cherubini, Gloaming, and Rossini. Great Northern Derby: Sextant, Medallion, Menschikoff, Gladsome. Boniform, Danube, Cherubini, and GTBaming. Australian Jockey Club’s Derby: Noctuiform, Biplane, Gloaming, and Cupidon. Victoria Derby: Biplane. Tho King’s Guest gelding Mazama. who has “been an inmate of S. Trilford’s stable nt Riccarton for a few months, has gone south. He was placed under Trilford’s ■ care to be educated as a hurdler, but after a promising start he took a strong dislike to the jumping business, and the attempt to make a hurdler of him had to be abandoned. He trill go back to join Mr. W. T. Hazlett’s team in Invercargill and will bo a competitor at the Gore Racing Club’s meeting next week Cupidon gave trainer Mason a surprise when she won the Derby nt Randwick. "I didn't really expect her to win,” he said. "The opponents proved to be not as "-cod as I thought. You see. Cupidon was a rather small horse to carry Bst. 101 b. But she proved more than good enough 1 There was n field of about 16, I think. It was hard luck ithat (Glooming developed influenza,” added Mr. Mason. "Ho would have done well in the <iged races ” The quartet transhipped to the ferry steamer on Wednesday, and will go to their quarters in Christchurch. Cupidon cost Mr. Greenwood .£525.
