ARMENIAN MASSACRES

STRANGE DEFENCE AT A COURTMARTIAL A MONSTROUS POLICY By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Constantinople, October 8. A British court-martial has heard an extraordinary case. A young Armenian named Torlakian was charged with murdering Djivanchir, formerly Minister of tho Interior of Azerbaijan. When he was arrested, Torlakian said that he acted to avenge the death of his father, brother, sister, wife and children, who were murdered under his eyes at Baku, when the Armenians were massacred by Djivanchir’s orders for 4 three days. Many witnesses stated that the Turkish Tartar Government organised tho massacre. The.strangest feature of the trial was the speech in defence, in which it was boldly stated that the Orient is a region of officially organised massacre. When Governments are confronted by racial difficulties they ’ settle them by sending cipher messages to officials instructing them that a massacre is to begin at a certain hour. This monstrous policy was carried out officially at Baku, in accomplishment of tho Pan-Islamic and Pan-Turanian programme. The defence did not deny the crime, but pleaded justification.—Aus.-N.Z.
