MR. HUGHES IN FRANCE
1 BATTLEFIELDS VISITED MEMORIALS TO AUSTRALIANS By Telegraph—Presa Association—Copyright London, August 24. Mr. Hughes made a tour of the battlefields in the Amiens pegion, where the conditions to-day are in marked contrast to those of his last visit, during the war. ' He was accompanied by officers who had taken part in the campaign, and described tho events on the ground. .Mr. Hughes also visited l the cemeteries, which told plainly of the cost of the victory. At Villers-Bretonneux, Mr. Hughes visited the site/ of the proposed memorial to the Australians’ defence of Amiens. The site, on a hill overlooking. the battlefield, has been criticised because it is out of the way, and not visible from the main road. Mr. Hughes deferred his decision as to the retention of the site. z At Bonnay, Mr. Hughes unveiled a Cross of Sacrifice, and made an impressive speech in reference to ths part played in the war by the Australian forces. There are to be five divisional memorials —at Pozieres, Mont St. Qmyitin, BelHnglise, Polygon Wood, anel Snilly-le-Sec. (Only that at Sailly is completed.’ Here Mr. Hughes stopped to lay a wreath on the memorial," and was welcomed by the Mayor*’ and council.—Special to Press Assn.
