NOTES AND COMMENTS By Glencoe. Too. Taua, who is to race for tho Douglas Estate in tho Avondale Guineas, will run a public trial in the Oringi Welter Handicap at the Dannevirko Hunt Club meeting on Wednesday. Of the 55 horses engaged in the New kealyand Cup, 39 are trained in the North Island. Tho list includes most of the best horses at present in commission, also the usual number of moderates which seem quite out of place in a two-mile race. Three-year-olds are better represented than usual, their number including Big Chief, Lord Martian, Penitent, Quest, Wheatfield, Toa Taua, The Hawk, Royal Box, Anomaly, Quarrelsome, Bluff, Five-Eighths, Prince F'erouz, and Pluto. Very few of the entrants have so far shown much ability over lengthy courses, the best tried in this respect being Sasanof, Imaribbon, Elens, Vagabond; Affectation, Maioha, Starland, and Lovomatch. Now that Mr. J. Goring Johnston has decided to relinquish racing, his former trainer, G. Price, intends netting up in business on his own account. Ho has Creme de Menthe in steady work, and expects a couple of horses from Wanganui and Feilding very shortly. Mr G D. Greenwood's only representatives in the Now Zealand Cup are Egotism and Pluto, which suggests that his team now at Randwick will remain in Australia for the V.R.C. spring meotin Nominations for tho spring meeting of tho Wanganui Jockey Club close on Monday next.
Discussing tho report of the Racing Commission and its recommendation that all clubs should bo compelled to provide a ten shillings’ machine, a leading official gave it as his opinion that this was a grave mistake as it encouraged gambling by those least able to afford it. Some years ago a five shillings’ machine was installed at Addington, but there was such a hue and cry raised, by the antiracing fraternity that the Metropolitan Club was pleased to drop it. On the other hand, a ten shillings’ machine means extra expense to clubs, and in these days of extra taxation clubs are compelled to keep down expense or they will be unable to make ends .meet. Gang Awa’ has finished his racing career, and has been returned to his owner at Foxton. The Wanganui trained Amber lips, who got cut about a good deal when lie won the Heretaunga Handicap at Hastings at the winter meeting of the Hawke s Bay Jockey Club, is still one of the hospital lots. During the season just closed tho Auckland Trotting Club paid to the Government by way of taxation tho sum ot £19,455. 5 Mr. G. F. Moore’s brood mare Ata Mio Rosette will this year bo mated with tho Liuacre horse, Acre. R. Reed was offered the ride on Mr. E. A Connolly’s Rostrum in tho Epsom Handicap at Randwick, but he is unable to get over to tho meeting. Mr. G. L. Stead’s pair, Starland and Royal Box.'aro the only horses from Auckland with engagements m the New Zealand Cup. , , . C Morse did not take Dribble back to Gisborne and the All Black mare is now trained by T. 11. Gillett at Riccarton. Sho should bo useful in hurdle races in tho South Island. Mr. J. B. Gaisford has Stetson, Cc.l--misia, and Mark Time engaged at the Egmont-Wanganui Hunt Club meeting. Stetson looks well, but is not too sound, while Celmisia has been giving her ownertrainer a lot of trouble. Mark r * ra ®’ a brother to Marquoteur, has come on well, but is a colt that will require a good deal of time. . . Insurrection was a runner m the Rose hill Handicap run early this month, but he was not fancied by the public, and finished just outside a place. A Press Association cable message from Ivondon states that Alan Brock has been scratched for the St. Leger.
THE NEW ZEALAND HUNTS ASSOCIATION ANNUAL MEETING. A special general meeting of the New Zealand Hunts Association was held in tho Canterbury Jockey Club rooms at Christchurch on August 9, Mr. D. W. Westerna, president of the association, was in the chair, and the following delegates were present: Dannevirke, Mr. Daniel Bohan; North Taranaki, Mr. B. H. Chaney; Brackenfield, Mr. M. Bethell ; South Canterbury, Mr. H. Elworthy; Christchurch, Mr. J. H. Grigg; Birchwood, Mr. Liddell; Otago. Mr. L. Orbell; Poverty Bay, Mr. Harold Russell; Rangitikei, Mr. R. G. Reid; Waimate district, Mr E. C. Studholmo; EgmontWanganui, Mr. Trotter. , The meeting was called to confirm the amended rules of the association which were dkawn up at a special general meeting held for that purpose in Wellington on January 21 last, and also to consider any further alterations. Remits from Dannevirke, Otago, Brackenfiold, and Pakuranga were taken individually and carefully considered, but in each case were not carried, and it was finally moved by tho president and seconded by Pakuranga, that the amended rules as printed and circulated to all hunts, be adopted.—Carried. The annual general meeting of toe association immediately followed with the same representation of delegates. The president (Mr. D. Westerna), in his opening speech, on tho doings of th© association during tho past twelve months, and trusted that hunting would continue to prosper in New Zealand. The balance-sheet showed a credit of £33 Ils. 3d., but beyond this them was a further £l9 for expenses yet to bo paid. The president moved and Pakuranga seconded tho adoption of the balance-sheet. —Carried. The election of officers was then proceeded with. Poverty Bay (Mr. H. Russell) moved, and Egmont-Wanganui (Air. Trotter) seconded that Air. D. Westerna bo re-elected president for tho ensuing year. It was felt, by all present, that Mr. AVcsterna had taken a very lively interest in the welfare of tho association, and that they could not possibly do better than ask him to again take the position. This was carried unanimously. Election of secretary—Mr. H. InnesJones, who has held this office for the last seven years, expressed a wish to be relieved of the position as soon as a suitable opportunity occurred. The president expressed his great regret at losing Air. Innes-Jones as secretary, and he knew that all present would be equally sorry. Waimate district (Air. E. C. Studholme) spoke in a similar strain, and proposed a very hearty vote of thanks be accorded Air. Innes-Jones for his past services, which was carried with acclamation. The appointment ol secretary and treasurer was left in the bands of tho executive to deal with. The following were elected for the executive committee: —Delegates from Birchwood, Waimate, Pakuranga, and North. Taranaki, and officers ex officio. Waimate district (Air. E. C. Studholme) spoke nt some length on. the financial loss many clubs were sustaining, and it was finally left in tho hands of the executive to go into tho question of red'uction of taxation to hunt clubs. The next annual meeting was arranged to be held in Wellington in July next year. A vote of thanks to tho chair terminated the meeting.
