BAKERS AND PASTRYCOOKS

MASTERS AND MEN FORGATHER. The 'second annual dinner of the combined bakers and pastrycooks was held on Saturday evening in Dustin’s Hall, Cuba Street. Mr. T. Rowell (president of the Wellington Master Bakers’ nnd Pastrycooks’ Union) presided. Tho Mayor (Mr. R. A. Wright, M.P), Dr. Newman, M.P., and Mr. G. Mitchell, M.P., were among the invited guests There was a happy mingling of employers and employees, and the function proved a great success. The following toasts were honoured "The King”; “Combined Trades,” proposed by Mr. C. E. Bell and responded to by Mr. F. W. Brower (president of tho Bakers’ Union); “Parliament” proposed by Mr. F. Mawhinney (treasurer of tho union), responded to bv Dr. Newman, Mr. R. A. Wright, and Mr. G. Mitchell. The three members made humorous speeches. Dr. Newman remarked that the chief duty of a member of Parliament was to stand a lot of .slang and subscribe to everything that was going Mr. Wright commended ihe loyalty of those present and the excellent speech made by tho proposer. Mr. Mitchell commented on tho excellent spirit displayed by tho gathering, in the meeting of mnsters ap'd men in a social way. Ho referred to the British Constitution as being the best ifi tho world, and observed that none of them would be prepared to change the constitution of the Empire for anything offering in the world to-day. Another toast honoured was “Old Members,” proposed by Mr. C. Beynon and responded to by Mr. A. Collins, secretary of the Bakers’ Union. Songs and music filled in the evening pleasantly.
