SELF-DETERMINATION LEAGUE
A GENERAL MEETING. A general meeting of members of the Self-Determination for Ireland League was held in the Paramount Theatre last night, when a report from the executive was received, and several resolutions wore passed. The report contained tho following passages:— "By the decision of an early meeting of members, we were authorised to assume the responsibility of organising the provincial districts of Wellington, Hawke’s Bay, Taranaki, Nelson, and Marlborough. The result hag been the formation of forty-one branches. In view of the fact that most of this work has been done by correspondence, members will probably feel that this result is satisfactory. The treasurer reports that the receipts from membership tickets to date amounts to £l9B 14s. 6d., representing approximately a membership of 1987. This refers almost entirely to members who have joined in and around the city of Wellington. We have been unable to get the figures of membership from the forty-one branches in the country districts. "The treasurer reports that tho total amount received by way of donations has been £328 13s. The amount comes principally from sympathises in and around the city of Wellington. The country branches have not yet been called upon to forward any proportion of their receipts to head office. Your committee has had printed and has distributed' throughout the districts named above, something like 170,000 pamphlets and leaflets. In addition we have published by arrangement "The Case for Ireland” in two newspapers. Our expenditure to date has reached the sum of £292 15s. 5d., most of which has been spent in printing and publishing. "On July 6 a provincial convention instructed your committee to undertake tho work of calling a convention representative of the whole of New Zealand. This work was in hand when tho truce was arranged between Britain and Ireland. We then found it necessary to postpone the date of meeting of this national convention.” Tho following resolutions were passed: "That this meeting records its appreciation of tho late Air. T. J. Ryan's services to the cause of Ireland, and expresses its condolence with his widow and family in/ the loss they have sustained by his sudden and untimely death. "That this meeting places on record its appreciation of tho services rendered to the cause of Ireland by Miss Katherine Hughes, of Canada. “That this meeting records its entire confidence in President de Valera and the Dail Eireann to determine tho policy which will best serve tho interests of tho people of Ireland; that a copy of this resolution be cabled to President de Valera."
