N.Z. CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIP WON EASILY BY WELLINGTON. In the presence of an exceptionally large number of the crosscountry championship of New Zealand was decided at the Hutt Park on Saturday. Tho course was in excellent condition, and three provincial teams, in addition to individual entrants from the various clubs in Wellington who were contesting the Sealed Handicap, faced tho starter. The teams were as follow: — Wellington—W. Scatchard (captain;, R. Bell, D. Todd, A. Barclay, H. E. Moore. Otago—C. W. Frye (captain), J. Beatson, J. P. Forbes, J. Stables, A. E. M. Kerr. Canterbury—R. 0. Page (captain), A. W. Page, E. D. R. Smith, G. Morrison, J. Lang. The competitors in the Scaled Handicap comprised: P. Harvey, F. Harlen, C. Dentice (Brooklyn); F. Rowberry, A. Hose (Wellington); T. Wilson, C. Campbell, N. Craig, K. Griffen, H. M'Cormack (Olympic). The. gathering was held under the auspices of the Wellington Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association, and the following officials were responsible for ths excellent arrangements:—Referee, Mr. A. T. Davies; judges, Messrs. B. A. Guise and W. H. Bennett; starter, Mr. T. W. Leslie; time-keepers, Messrs. L. W. Ludwig, W. Ballantyne, and W. H. Pollock; recording stewards, Messrs. D. C. Todd. J. Finn, A. Bayfield, J. W. O'Neill, clerk of course, Mr. F. Hodson; number stewards, Mr. J. V. Power; call stewards, Messrs. W. Donaldson, G. C. Sherwood, H. J. Pollock; official trail-layer, Mr. S. Hall J handicapper. Mr. A. G. Kitto; stewards, Messrs. A. W. O. Travers, G. H. Lusk, — Clerk, M. Bunkman-Murray, J. C. Cusack, N. P. Cress, J. London, C. E. Bridge; hon. secretary, Mr. J. O’Sullivan. Zealand Championship. For the major portion of the distance Todd (Wellington) was in the lead, with Moore (Wellington) occupying second place. ‘When Todd passed the grandstand in the last six furlongs he wm leading by about nine yards, and both men were running strongly. An exciting finish ensued, and as the straight was entered Moore had established a lead of 25 yards, which he maintained until he breasted tho tape. Barclay (Wellington) finished third. Time, 82min. 6sec. lhe time for tho Wellington Provincial Championship, which was won by Moore last week, was 34min. 23sec. The New Zealand championship was won last year bv C. W. Frye (Otago). Ssec.; Boatson (Otago), 33min. 17sec.; Staples (Otago), 33min. 35sec.; Craig (Olympic Harriers), 33min. 50sec.; Page (Canterbury), 33min. 54sec.; Kerr (Otago), 34min. 6sec.; Rowberry (Wellington Harriers), 34min. 13sec.; Morrison (Canterbury), Simin. 19sec.; Smith (Canterbury), 34min. 285e0.; Forbes (Otago), 34min. SGsec.; Wilson (Olympic Harriers), Simin. 59sec’; Harvey (Brooklyn Harriers), 35min. 21sec.; Harlen (Brooklyn Hauliers), 35min. 35sec.; Hose (Brooklyn Harriers), 35min. 53sec.; Pago (Canterbury), 3Gmin. 30sec. Wellington, with 13 pointe, thus wins the championship, while Otago (33 points) takes second place. Canterbury (61) is third. The Sealed Handicap. Tho Sealed Handicap was won by C. Dentice (85sec.), Brooklyn Harriers. Time, 31mm. 40sec. G. Morrison (145) came second and F. Rowberry .(135) was third, their respective times being Simin. 54sec., and 31min. 58sec.
