OTAGO HARBOUR COLLISION
NAUTICAL INQUIRY OPENED. By Telegraph —Press Association. Dunedin, August 11. A nautical inquiry into the collision between the barque Rothesay Bay and the steamer Calm in tho lower harbour on July 7 has commenced. Captain Campbell, master of the barque, stated that, the vessel arrived from Tiobart with timber, and was towed to the Carey Bay anchorage. Riding lights were put in position. When' ho came on deck after the shock ho hailed the steamer, asking for its name, but he. heard no reply. Questions submitted by the Departincut were whether Captain Braidwood, master of tho Calm, failed to keep a sufficient look-out or keep tho Calm sufficiently to tho starboard side of the channel; whether Captain Campbell failed to display and keep burning proper lights; whether the Harbour Board pilot failed to anchor tho barqnc at a safo anchorage far enough in the fairway. It was stated that a. further possible question might be whether the Calm failed to give a name when hailed.
