A strange sight, was witnessed by th© men of tho Naviia-, when that eleamer waa on her way from Auckland to Newcastle (states an exchange). In accordance with the Union Company's instructione a look-out was being kept for signs which might help to solve the mystery of the disappearance of the Canastota. One day, away out in the middle of the Tasman Sea, tho look-cut noticed n. peculiar white object on the water. It seemed to float level with the surface of tho water, rising and falling cn the swell. Powerful glasses failed to disclose the nature of the object. Within the white mass two black dots could he discerned, and the general configuration suggested that these were the ends of a spar The Navua was brought around in a wide circle, and cautiously approached. Officers and men were puzzled, and everyone watched the strange object. Even when ■within li miles of it. through glasses, they could not tell the nature of it. Then suddenly the whole mass rose in the air. It was something the sailors had never seen before in those waters—a close packed flock of albatrosses floating on th© surface. The dark dets were young albatrosses, which as is not generally known, are almost black in colour. “I had never seen such a thing in all my years at sea,” said one of the officers. "The birds were massed together in a peculiar way. and with the black ‘chicks,’ they had the appearance of a large piece of a shin. Most of us thought we had discovered some trace of the Canastota. VALMAR-lE’S BUFFETING. An unexpected arrival at Auckland cn Sunday afternoon -was the three-masted schooner Valmarie. which put into port in distress. The vessel left Clarence River, New South Wales, for Wellington, on July 14 with a cargo of hardwood. Fino weather was experienced until three days out-, when the schooner ran into strong westerly winds and heavy seas. The weather increased in severity, and about 12.45 p.m. on July 18 the bob-stay parted, causing the jib-boom to snap off near the stem-head. With the big sea running it was impossible to save the boom, which had to be cut away in order to clear the vessel of the wreckage. A temporary forestay was rigged, and the master. Captain Olsen, decided to set a course for Auckland, owing to the 'provailing weather conditions. On the following the schooner lost both her mainsail and foresail. On July 20 the weather cleared, and for the four ensuing days good progress was made. Her troubles, however, were not yet over, for on July 25 a gale from the north-east set in. compelling th© vessel to ride “hove-to’’ for two days. On the following day the sails also had to bo lowered, and during this operation Captain. Olsen who was assisting the crew to man the sails, fell from eff the. deckhoiue, severely cutting the back of his head. His wound -was dressed by the mate of the Valmarie, and on arrival In port medical attention was given -by the port health officer. During the last stages of her voyage to Auckland the Valmarie met with light variable winds off the New Zealand coast, except on Saturday, when she again experienced strong south-westerly and north-westerly winds. The Valmarie will undergo insnection. aft or v.liicli she will resume her voyage to Wellington. Sho has 115,0K)ft. of Hardwood on. board WAIHORA DUE TO-NIGHT.
