SHEEP RETURNS
CONSIDERABLE FALLING OFF. The number of sheep depasturing in the Dominion on April 36, according to the figures published in tho Gazette, was approximately 23,236,328, a# compared with 23,919,970 at the corresponding date of tho previous year, a decrease of 683,642. The figures for each year commencing with 1912 show as under:— 1912 ; 23,750,153 1913 24,191,810 1914 24,798,763 1915 24,901,421 1916 at,788,150 1917 25,270,386 1918 26,354,594 1919 25,828,554 1920 23,919,970 1921 23,236,328 From 1912 to 1918 there was steady increase, except in 1916, when there was a slight decrease. Since 1918 the numbers have steadily contracted, and there are now fewer sheep in New Zealand than in 1912. Compared with 1918 the tally shows a shrinkage of 3,118,266, or, approximately, Hi per cent, in three years.
