PETONE WAR MEMORIAL
A meeting of the Petone IVar Memorial Committee was hold on IVednesday, the Alayor (Mr. XV. M'Ewan) presiding. The resignation of Mr. C. N. Haslam was received with regret, and, on the motion, of tho chiumiaii, it was decided to nlaoc on record the committee’s appreciation of the services rendered by Mr. Haslam, who had acted in the capacity of secretary since the inception of the committee. Mr. M'Ewan congratulated Mr. Haslam on his appointment to an inspectorate at Canterbury, and wished him every success in his new sphere. Mr. D. M'Kenzio (chairman of the Board of Managers of the Petone Technical School) and Mr. G. London also mado eulogistic reference to the work for which Mr. Haslam had been responsible. Air. Haslam suitably responded. Air. O. Silbory was elected secretary. Communications were received from the Coromandel Granite Company and Messrs. Parkman and Co., of Auckland, quoting prices for war memorials in inva marble. Coromandel granite, and Australian granite. After consideration of the designs and prices submitted it was decided to accept the design of the Coromandel Co., at £B5O, tho memorial to be erected on foundations to be provided at Petone. The feature of the design selected is a sculptured New Zealand soldier. 7ft. Bin. in height, erected on a suitable base.. The total height when erected will be 20ft. It was decided to write the Borough Council asking that a conference regarding tho site on which it is proposed to erect the memorial, be held at nn early date.
