LEAGUE FOOTBALL
SATURDAY’S GAMES. Weather conditions on Saturday were very unpleasant for players and spectators interested in the continuation of tho competition under tho auspices of tho Wellington Rugby League. At Newtown Park tho ground for' tho Athletic-City match was half under water, and good football was out of tho question. Athletic adapted themselves to the conditions bettor than their opponents, and ■were successful by 11 points to 2. At Rotone, Central put up a great gamo against tho leading team, and wore only defeated by a small margin. PETONE (19), CENTRAL (14). Theso teams met on tho Petone Oval. The ground was very heavy, and good hack play was out of the question, but nevertheless the pace was very fust throughout. Petone wcV the toss, and played with the wind in their favour. The opening stages saw Petone attack strongly, and from a forward rush Childs crossed the Hue. Nicholls failed to convert. After a period of open and even ploy, Hedges picked up, and, beating the opposition badly, scored. The kick failed. Almost immediately afterwards .Brace got over for Petone from a passing rush, and Baulke converted. Central retaliated, Bezar following up smartly and scoring. Gruer failed to convert. Petone then had the better of play for some time. Nunn and Kruse scored tries and Nicholls kicked a penalty goal. Just before half-time Gruer kicked a penalty goal for Central, making tho scores 16—8 in Pctono’s favour. On resuming, Petone set up a strong attack, and Nicholls scored. Central than made things very warm for Petone. Hedges crossed tho line. Gruer failed to convert. Maintaining the pressure. Koley scored again for Central, the kick failing. East, open ploy intervened but no further score was registered. Mr. Snow was referee
ATHLETIC CD. CITY (2). The ground at Newtown Park was in a very bad state, and back play was impossible. The forwards were evenly matched, but tho Athletic backs adapted themselves to tho conditions better than their opponents. City played with the wind Tmt Athletic attacked immediately and Dobson scored from a solo 'effort Just before half-time A. Withy got across from a forward scramble. In the second spell City started well, and Salisbury kicked a nice penalty goal. Athletic then had matters their own wav. Thompson scored a very pretty try Just before time L. The City team, which is unbeaten, has been declared tho winner of tho club championship. In tho opening games of the Roope Rooster Competition City beat Newton 13 points to 7; Maritime beat Mariat Old Boys by 10 to 8; Ponsonby beat North Shors by 34 to 11.
