SATURDAY’S MATCHES. IHISTLE BEAT INSTITUTE The Association football competitions 'wero continued on Saturday. , A. good deal of interest was taken in 'the contest between Thistle and Institute, Jdayed on the Basin Reserve, but at no ‘©tags of the game <iid Thistle look like being 'beaten. The conditions were all agcjlnst attractive football, the ground being very soft and the ball greasy. On the day’s play the win for Thistle by 3 ‘goals to 1 was deserved, tho combination pf the winners being superior to that of Institute.' Thistlo took the field two mon ehort but tho places wore filled after a few minutes’ play, and Thistle set up ®.n attack which ended with a shot at goal by H. Smith, Tarrant, the Institute goalkeeper, bringing off a lovely save by tipping the ball over the bar. Tarrant effected another good eave a little later, ’conceding a corner, which availed the attacking side nothing. Still another opportunity cams tho way of Thistle, and • Campbell had a shot from straight in front of the goal, the ball going outside one of the uprights. A further shot by Campbell went over the bar. At length O’Shta, from the centre, passed to M'Arthur, who sent in a difficult cross shot /which just missed the mark. Institute took a turn at attacking, and a close1 range ehot was nicely eavod by Haddow. ‘‘A long kick by Taylor from his own quarters saw the greasy ball boat the institute right back, and 1 Campbell, who was following fast, gained possession and ehot a pretty goal. Thistle, 1; Institute, 0. Tarrant was again called on to save from a shot directly in front, but Institute survived this and two corners which followed immediately after. Institute took a turn at attacking, but their passing suffered in comparison with that of their opponents, and tho Thistle fullbacks were a stubborn pair. The scale tipped' again in favour of Thistle, and on three occasions Tarrant was called on to save. Thistlo were rewarded at last, a pass to Brownlee in front of goal enabling him to send in a shot which gave Tarrant no chance. Thistle, 2; Institute, 0. (Shortly before the end of the spell Thistle wore awarded, a penalty. -Campbell had po difficulty in finding tho net. Thistle, 3; Institute, 0. With a gale of wind behind them in the second half, it was expected that Institute would give their opponents a lively time, but this was not the case. They certainly tested Haddow on several occasions, ’ but only got one goal past him, this being through tho agenoy of Jeffries. Tho ball was checked by the goalkeeper but the pace of the shot: and tho slippcriness of the leather beat him. Some promising rushes were initiated by Thistle, and some were driven right home, but Tarrant, who had played an excellent game throughout, was always to be relied on. The final score was: Thistle, 3; Institute, 1. Mr. C. I l '. Ward was referee. Other senior matches resulted as follow: — Diamonds 3. Petone 1. Porirua 2, Swifts 1. Y.M.C.A. B 2, South Wellington 1.
