AUSTRALIAN BANANAS
TRIAL SHIPMENT TO WELLINGTON Years ago a great many bananas used to come to New Zealand from Fiji, but with the development, of the bananaglowing industry in the Cook Islands the Dominion became practically dependent r.n that group for its supplies of this nutritious fruit. Tho fact that a trial shipment of Australian bananas arrived here last week from Sydney and sold readily at 30s. a case will not be welcome news in Rarotonga and Aitutaki. Bananas can be grown in Australia as easily as in the Islands, and such is the local supply from Queensland and New South Wales that protection. was recently afforded the growers by placing an imjtort duty on. Fiji bananas. Evidently Australia is now looking for a market in New Zealand. The bananas from Australia are of moderate size, and arrived here without a blemish. They aro nicely-flavoured, and are, perhaps, even better for table purposes than the larger or less-sightly fruit from the Islands. The importation was made by Messrs. Griffiths and Co., who are pleased with tire result of their experiment, and will probably continue to introduce further stocks if shipping facilities permit.
