TOURNAMENTSAND MATCHES The Wellington Chess Club’s annual championship tourney hae attracted 14 entries. The play is somewhat in arrear mainly owing to the fact that three Saturday evenings were devoted to the recent telegraphic match against the Canterbury Club. Mr. 11. J. Barnes (exchampion) is leading with three clear wins. The next best tallies are:—E. A. Hicks, 2-1; S. Faulknor, 2—l; W. C. White, I|—lJ; G. P. Anderson, 1-0; A. W. Gyles, 1—0; and D. L. Bruton, I—o. Mr. W. E. Mason, tho club champion, has not started ns well as he usually does, but it is expected that he will make a strong run in the remaining ten rounds.
The best scores to date in tho club’s annual handicap tourney (in which there are 25 competitors) are as follow: —■ Gylee sen., 71 —1; E. S. Taylor, s—o;5 —0; A. L. Lawson, s—l; W. C. White, 5—2; H. Jessup, s*—B; Barnes, 41 —1; E. A. Hicks, 4J —21; Wring, 41—21; A. E. Jessup, 4—l; C. Dryden, 4—4; A. S. T. Butler, 3) —11; Airs. Gytes, 3—3; Fouhy, jun., 3—3; Crandle, 21 —1|; I). L. Bruton, 1—1; and H. H. Hind, 1-j. Ladder matches have been won by Messrs. Fairburn, Fouhy, jun., Crandlo, Lawson, and D. F. M'Arthur (two matches). A dozen new challenges have been posted, clearly indicating that those ladder contests have not lost their 1 popularity. WORKINGMEN'S CLUB.

A close finish may be looked forward to. MASTERTON V. OTAGO. The recent telegraphic match between these clubs was very stubbornly contested, Masterton finally scoring an unexpected win by one poinr (7J—6l). The Wairnrapn players, who issued their challenge with some diffidence, have received many congratulations on their fine performance. Particularly meritorious was the play of Paul Kummer, who drew with Dunlop (New Zealand champion) at board 1, and also the play of his cousin, F. Kummer (the well-known congress player), who scored from A. W. O. Davies (an ex-champion of New Zealand) at board 2.
