In response to the Mayor’s appeal for people to pay rates, or a proportion of them, before th® demands are issued, the Rates Office had some callers yesterday who paid the greater part of their rates The amount received was not very large, but the spirit in which it was paid, was appreciated in the right quarter. , The Mayor’s desire is that some of the bigger firms, owning a good' deal of property, will endeavour to contribute to the city’s finances by paying their rates (or an approximate sum) at their earliest convenience. The demand for seven per cent, interest on the overdraft (to be paid from August 1), only tends to increase the city’s financial troubles. There is questioning comment on the proposed action of the banks doing business in New Zealand in raising the interest on overdrafts, when the banks in londion are easing up. It is contende that the direct effect of such action will be to make money still dearer all r0 “ n “’ severely check expenditure, and tend to increase prices. ______ ’
