COAL FOR GASWORKS
A SUPPLY’ FROM AUSTRALIA. An arrangement has been made between tho New Zealand Government and the Australian Government for the lelease of a certain quantity of Australian gas coal for export to the Dominion. The quantity is stated to be 5000 tons niontnly, aud the coal will come from a mine that produces a quality of coal particularly suitable for gas manufacture. One of the chief difficulties connected with the supply and distribution of coal in this country during the last year or two has, it is stated, been to provide the gas works with adequate supplies of suitable ccal many of the imported lots being quite unsuitable for this purpose. A monthly supply of 5000 tons will not go very far towards covering the reouiroments of the gasworks tnroughout n iand°: and "other -rangemeirts will require to bo made, AuAUnd gasworks alone consume about toO tons ot coal a day. and would use the whole 5000 tons in less than a month.
