INVITATION TO MINERS
HOPES FOR SETTLEMENT OF DISPUTE
NATIONAL POOL DEMAND By Telegraph—Pre«a Association— Copyright (Rec. May 19, 8.50 p.m.) London, Alay 18. It is hoped that to-day’s conversations, following the inclination of tho miners’ leaders to relax their demand for a national pool, will enable Mr. Lloyd Getige to summon a conference for the weekend. It is significant that the Premier is cancelling engagements and will remain in London.
The Central News Agency states that the Government has suggested that the miners should drop the pooling proposal, though the Government ; s prepared to put before an impartial tribunal any scheme involving a method which would compel the richer properties to support the poorer ones. The miners nave also been invited to consider a new wages scheme based on the principle governing the recent railway agreement. This would involve the establishment of a mining national wages board, he grouping of mining areas, and t/he consequent setting up of group councils of owners and miners for each area. The Government expects the miners to agree te the application of a sliding scale of wades increases and reductions, leaving it to the central board to make ndiustinenis.
The executive of tho railwaymen and transport workers have reaffirmed their decision not to handle nonj-union coal. — Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
