IMMIGRATION POLICY
GOVERNMENT MAINTAINING RESTRICTIONS. A recent cablegram from London stated that about 2900 immigrants would leave for New Zealand in June, and that possibly 1000 ex-Service men would embark for the Dominion in August. Alarm has been expressed in some quarters lest these immigrants should increase unemployment in New Zealand. The Minister in charge of the Immigration Department (the Hon. .W. Nosworthy) stated yesterday that the Governmeint was not departing from the .policy it announced a week or two ago. of confining immigration for the present to persona who were assured of housingand employment on-their arrival here. The immigrants, who were to leave Britain in June, were all persons who had been nominated and guaranteed employment by friends or relatives in this country. The Government did not intend to restore the immigration scheme to full operation until conditions became normal in the Dominion.
